Up until the early 1980s, the two were pretty much independant of each other. Minilabs changed all that, as camera stores started installing small photolabs to take care of the proofing needs of a large % of their customer base. What digital has done is changed the way consumers look at their pictures, and has, to an extent, put the entire lab industry on life support.
