Yes, those are the real colors.  Before sunset it is incredibly dark,
with many stars clearly visible.  As the sun nears the horizon, the
sky lightens, turning a very deep blue, then it lightens as the sun
pops above the horizon and begins to rise rapidly.

Remember, this was taken from the summit, which is about 10,000 feet
above sea level.  The air is incredibly clear.  Here is a shot taken
later in the morning, on another trip in another year.  It shows Mauna
Kea, on the Big Island of Hawaii, which is more than 75 air miles
away.  One can also see Mauna Loa, about 95 miles away.  That is good
visibility.
