Thanks Ann. The color noise was the main reason I converted, but I like the feel of the BW better than the original color as well. That point and shooter at ISO 800 is noisier than the K20D at 6400, but it takes nice pictures at ISO 100, and it's decent at 400.

Bah Humbug! :-)

Paul it looks like this time Grace was so transfixed she forgot you might take her pic... which is what makes it work for me the most. I think convert to BW good idea - I imagine
the various colors people are wearing would distract a lot.

Around this time every year the mall near our house stages a Santa arrival. The event draws a crowd that must number near 1000. Everyone sits waiting anxiously for Santa. The mall management does it up big with a reporter up on the roof broadcasting to a wide screen TV down below and an elaborate Santa castle in the center of the mall's large atrium. Finally, smoke fills the stage and Santa emerges. Every kid in the audience and most of the adult are transfixed. I snapped this pic with my little Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1. I had to go to ISO 800 to avoid using flash. I held the camera nearly at ground level, so I could look up at Grace and the crowd. The result was noisy as heck, but I smoothed it out a bit and converted it to BW. It's here:
