Coming in late on this - busy the last few days - but like many
issues, context and details make a difference. I totally agree with
the original premise if there is an auction, and a handful of PDMLers
have found it, the gentlemanly thing to do is to let them have at it
without complicating their life by bringing the auction to the
attention of the larger PDML list. However, many items on eBay are
NOT auctions. They are simple sales where a "BIN" is the only option.
In that case, I say announce away. Spread the word. With a fixed
price there is no chance that multiple interested parties will drive
the price higher.

=============
Usually people on list use different names on ebay, so sometimes
it's hard
to tell. The convention is that people usually don't mention it on
list at
all, if they have ended up buying from a PDMLer. FS Fridays are
different, they
are on list. So someone may say they bought a lens from so and so
sometimes.
As you have been told, the reason for not mentioning current
auctions is
that 1-3 people on list may actually be watching it. If you make
an announcement
their competition goes up. The idea is, find your own deals and
while you do
don't make it tougher for others.
I actually think the rule makes sense.
