In 2002 I visited Galipoli and was standing in the cemetary on the beach at Anzac Cove. I looked down and was stunned to see I was astride the tombstone of Leonard J. Lawlor an Australian, who fell April 25 1915, like so many, on the first day of that pointless episode in British imperialism.
