Others more knowledgeable than me can answer better.

With a negative, "everything" is an interpretation.  There is no such thing
as "as is".    Unlike transparency films where what you see is what you get.
Certain adjustments can be made, but it's the observer's intuition and
memory that determines what constitutes a correctly processed print.
There's a lot of latitude for exposure and correction with negative film.
