At best he misses the point. AFAIK no other DSLR from Pentax works that
way. There is no particularly good reason for the K-7 to work that way,
for the vast majority of their current users it's broken. It's almost
Microsoftian in that it's an arbitrary change, simply for the sake of
change, like most of the more infuriating changes from one version of
Windows to the next.
Oh but there IS a reason they changed it.
Do you remember how many people complained about the Fn button on the
K10/20D? I recall people bitching up and down this list about how they
hated having to dive into a menu to change the settings contained within,
how each setting should have its own button, etc. Pentax tried to
accommodate those people and now a whole new set of people have found a
whole new thing to bitch about.
In my opinion, and without having actually held a K7 yet, I think the new
system is superior. I've found it very easy to accidentally move the focus
point in selective point mode on my K10D, either with a finger or my nose.
An extra button press does not bother me.
Anyway, I doubt it's broken "for the vast majority of their current users,"
because I doubt a "vast majority" of Pentax users even use the selective
focus point feature. Advanced shooters like us, sure, but not Mrs.
Soccermom-Smith.
