The camera is being pessimistic.  It doesn't know how well it
it will be able to compress your files (PEfs, JPGs, or DNGs),
so it displays a (very) conservative estimate as to how many
images it will manage to fit on a card.

That, IMO, is the right thing to do.  It will be able to fit
at least the displayed number of images on the card - nobody
is going to complain if it manages to fit more on.  But if it
displayed a more realistic guess, and for some reason wasn't
quite able to fit the last image on the card, there would be
loud howlings and much angst displayed on, say, Pentax forums.
