Spent half an hour reading some online resources. What I've found so
far in favour of Bob's view is that reformatting is a quick way to get
rid of orphaned clusters. Didn't think of that... :-)

However in the case of camera memory cards, always receiving files
much larger than the partition's cluster size, I'd imagine that the
only situation where you'd get orphaned clusters is when the camera
battery dies during file writing. Or by using a SDHC card in a
reader/camera that only supports SD.

But then again, I've already been wrong once.
