Heidelberg Tango scanners have an optical resolution of up to 10,780 dpi.  
If you were to scan a 1" x 1.5" image at this resolution, you'd end up with 
about 175 million pixels.  24-bit files require 3 bytes per pixel for 
storage.  That puts you into the 525 million byte range for the raw data. 

Yeah, it's huge.... That said, I've seen some wall-sized enlargements of 
35mm chromes at Calypso Imaging in Santa Clara that are mind-blowing....
If your images are good enough, it may be worth it!
