Heck, I'd settle for a DS with the build quality of a D, (except for the icky four way controller).

The DS with the DA 40 is very small and "pocketable" in a coat with large
pockets. Not true of the K10D with the FA 20-35.

Yep, somewhat but the DA40 fits my K-7 better than it fitted my K10D.
Simply, the K10D was somewhat big, so fitting an ultraslim lens on it
was more questionable;
Is there something here other than whether the photons make it through
the glass to the sensor?

I can understand a lens being too big for hand holding on a body, like
my bigma. I don't understand the concept of "too small".

Handling is an issue. One reason I don't like Altoids-Tin P&S's or
M-series bodies. They're just too bloody small to handle nicely.

I've also found that large bodies and small lenses can be awkward to
work with. This led me to buying Nikon's largest mid-speed 50 for my
F2a, my pancakes were just too little for it.
