The shutter timing is often wrong on the high speeds on old mechanical cameras. You can tell easily if it is working reasonably. Open the back, hold the camera up to a bright light, and set it to 1/500. When the shutter goes off, what you should see is a full circle (or a full rectangle, if no lens is mounted) of light, not one side blanked out.
