You're basically right - that's why I have a 540 FGZ in my bag; my old 500 FTZ 
lost a lot of functionality on a K10D (although it still works just fine on the 
*istD and on the old film bodies).  The 500 FTZ doesn't offer any 
flash-controlled auto mode, though - it relies on the camera to act as the 
flash meter and controller - so all you have available is manual flash modes.
