It was very unlikely that the car would come over the wall? Watch it again.
Maybe not the whole car, but the rear wheel is up on top of the wall at one
point. That makes it quite possible that something could snag and wrench
the wheel off. Even just a wheel, at a mere 50mph, can ruin your whole day.
Indy Racing League had an accident several years back at Lowes' Motor
Speedway in Concord NC, where a wheel and tire flew OVER a 15 foot high
catch fence (put in place to intercept just that kind of flying debris)
and into the grandstand killing three and injuring eight spectators.
I think the fence is now something like 20 feet high, and significantly
strengthened.
And that car could have just as easily flipped lengthwise instead or
rolling to the side ... or gone from rolling sideways to rolling end to
end in just a heartbeat.
Plus, the damn thing could have burst into flame at any second, and the
low wall wouldn't stop that.
