Yes, learning can surely occur in these situations, with some caveats (lots of open minds, civility by all parties, ...). Unfortunately, I've seen it devolve into nastiness and ruin friendships and such far too often. Not to mention that it's the way I was raised, "praise in public, criticize in private", as one form of politeness.
