I manual focus all the time with my *istD.  Virtually all (if not
actually all) of my nature shots on my colour blog were shot with
manual focus lenses:

Pentax M 200mm f4.0,
Tokina 80-200mm f2.8 zoom
Sigma 50-200mm f3.5 zoom
Tamron SP 90mm f2.5 macro

Believe me, if you will be focusing manually, you want a manual focus
lens.  Your life will be soooo much easier...
