Assassin bugs are native to South America. Charles Darwin allowed one to bite him (their piercing mouthparts are able to numb the tissues, so you don't feel it). They live in thatched roofs of huts.
There is speculation that Darwin's poor health throughout his adult life was due to Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi infection) from the bug bite, but I doubt it.
