But still better prepare yourself beforehand. Most Japanese would just avoid 
you the 1st sign you spoke English. Some useful shopping tools - pen & paper 
(write down what you want in English), calculator (for bargaining). Some 
chain stores would offer you in-store credit. For instance, if you bought 
JP$7,000 stuff, you got 10% free credit on your next purchase. This could be 
useful even if you stay a few days only (because often different stores 
carry different items). Buying more than JP$10,000 could mean tax free too 
(5%), but you need to show your passport as a tourist.
