Actually, some of the old Leica lenses were pretty mediocre, and while one may debate their optical quality, for a while it was acknowledged that a lot of Japanese glass was better coated and less subject to hazing, air bubbles, and other flaws and weaknesses that even the purchaser of the cheapest consumer lens today would not accept. However, in the late fifties - early sixties their quality started to improve.
