I would think the "best" f stop to use would depend on the lens. I've never done any experimentation but since most lenses in my experience reach maximum sharpness stopped down between 2 and 3 stops from maximum I usually compromise by stopping down 2 1/2 stops, (awful lot of 'stops' back there). One of the reasons for the exceedingly small stops is to allow greater depth of field to use easel movement to correct converging lines sort of tilt and shift outside of the camera.
