I've read that the close focus distance is large. Funny, because its a "macro" 
at 135. My concern is image quality. If it can't do that, what's the point?

I had this lens many years ago.

I don't remember much specifics concerning image quality, but I never
had any complaints in that department.

I remember it was rather large and heavy for a lens in its range.

The only thing I didn't care for was it had a very far minimum focus distance.
