Hi folks,

Here's some information from NASA Tech Briefs Insider
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) on the new Foveon color CCD sensor array,
plus a link to additional details, for those who are interested.

COMPANIES TO WATCH
Dr. Carver Mead, a pioneer of the modern computer chip industry, has
developed
a new Silicon Valley company called Foveon, which will begin shipping a new
type of digital image sensor that can match the photographic capabilities
of 35-mm film.

The company's sensor chip is being used in a single-lens reflex camera made
in Japan, and a second generation of the sensor is scheduled for shipment
this fall. If purchased by other camera makers, it could be available early
next year in popular brands of digital cameras. Eastman Kodak has inquired
about using the Foveon sensor in one part of its product line.

Current digital sensors capture light via a mosaic of red, green, and
blue filters that limit information to one color per pixel on the surface of
the sensor. Foveon's X3 sensor captures color by measuring how deeply
photons
of light penetrate the surface of the imaging material. This method provides
a higher resolution from a given number of pixels.

The new technology also enables integration of high-resolution still
photography with full-motion video. A video camera using the technology
could
record an event, and midway through recording, the user could depress a
shutter button, capture a high-resolution photograph, and seamlessly
continue
recording video.
