I also I detest the $75 books that are 2" thick that purport to teach one how to do something, yet are little more than screen shots of what the author did. Totally useless.
I want to know why or under what circumstances I might wish to use a particular tool or technique. Many of them are totally superficial. Even Photoshop CS5 for Photographers has little more than a page or two per topic with it being half pictures that don't clearly illustrate the concept.
