I just sent someone a note and included a link to some of my fun DIY photo 
projects.  

I haven't yet got pictures of my backdrop hangers, or my various grids and 
snoots, but here are some of mine:

I made a "cheap" water and shock proof carrying case for some of my lenses:

I wanted to be able to use both hands on the camera when using the flash grip, 
so I kludged two together, so that my flash would rest on my shoulder

I use a monopod a lot, but carrying it was a pain, so I just use a maglite belt 
loop to hang it off my belt:

I was told that you can't get a sturdy tripod base for less than $200, so I 
made one out of an air tool manifold and some plumbing pieces for about $50, 
though it did require drilling and tapping five holes for the mounting plate:

What are some of your projects where you used cleverness to make something for 
a couple of bucks rather than spending a lot more to get it ready made?
