If the version of Photoshop you're running is 32-bit (CS3 and older),
4 gigs of RAM is all it can use.

Also, if you're still running CS2 or CS1, it's running those in
emulation mode (Rosetta), which is another source of slowness.

The solution to both problems? Throw money at an upgrade...
