Measure the brightest part of the scene that you want to keep detail in. Measure the darkest part of the scene that you want to keep detail in. Remember to account for colour failure of the measurement device if applicable.
With the K5, is that number less than 14 stops?
If yes, take the picture using an exposure that keeps what you want more or less centered in the histogram. Most of the time, this is the way it is, because most of the time, scenes are less than 7 stops.
