ahha ! another Geo guy!
I had geology as a minor in college and did honors work in it with one
of my profs....
then went on to rock hounding :-)
There is a dirt road off of route 70 where you can drive the length of
the fold on the eastern flank... It is basically capped with
Navaho Sandstone which lends itself to water pockets . There are neat
trails all over the place into the nooks and crannies.
The very first photo I submitted to PUG was of Capitol Reef. Bill Robb
is another serious fan of south east Utah... not that
anyone who has ever been there would be anything else :-)
Maybe someday I"ll be able to get back there.

Looks like a classic thrust fault, on a grand scale. I need to put
Capitol Reef on the list <g>. Shhh ... don't tell Ken. Ken ... DON'T
LOOK!!!
The Geologic history of that area is fascinating, being formed by
"geologic forces"; as opposed to "erosion forces" that formed the
Alleghenies and Blue Ridge ranges.
Thanks, I will continue reading about the area.

See.. I just promised Ken Waller I wouldn't tell you about Capitol
Reef.... :-)
It is up the road a piece .. a bit too far to dash off for a day and
get back to Vegas...
but google "waterpocket fold" images for a quickie look then read
about it.
Sorry, Ken -- as long as he doesnt tell everyone at his
convention.... :-)

I used to go to Vegas for a yearly networking (computer) trade show.
The last 3 years that I went, I went on the Friday before the show.
Arrived and went to Utah for the weekend. I stumbled on Zion the
first year (without my cameras) but turned those weekends into photo
excursions for the last 2. Hence, I haven't been to everything I
want to see (Canyonlands and Arches).
What's Capitol Reef all about? As I recall, it didn't capture my
imagination when I heard about it all those years ago ...

I have a slew of 'em myself... We might have passed each other on
a trail here and there :-)
You didn't meniotn Canyonlands or Arches -- was that just for the
sake of brevity?

Thanks for the input. I had SAMs Club convert a couple hundred
slides that I shot in the early 90's; with my ME & MX. This was
one of them. I'm planning to post these as GESO(s). I have photos
from Zion, Bryce, Cedar Breaks, Kodachrome Basin and Rocky
Mountain N.P.
You are right ... southern Utah is one of my FAVORITE places!

I particularly like the Zion shot... wonderful BW conversion...
and - well hell, it's one of my favorite places.
The other two are certainly well done, but don't say much to
me... too much just like an exercise in technique.

Tried sending this last night but it never was posted to the
list. Let's try it again...
After a long, cold winter of working on my photo album webpage
and associated management utilities; I have a bunch of stuff
from 2010 and 2011 to post. In the near future I hope to post a
couple of GESOs and more PESOs.
For now, here are 3 PESOs that didn't fit into any galleries, I
guess they are just photos in my photo "shoebox"...

As usual (it goes without saying) feedback and comments would be
appreciated.
