On your main point, I don't see what you refer to as noise in his image.
I don't much care for either image. I like yours better, but neither is all
that wonderful.
It took me a long time carefully looking at a magnified section of the images
to make out what is in the jumble of boulders in the foreground; for some time
I thought I was seeing blown-out highlights of sun-lit boulders. Then I
realized it was blown-out highlights of snow-covered boulders.
You have three areas of the images screaming for attention: the foreground
boulders, the midground water and hillsides, and the fog above. And oh by the
way the lone tree in the middle. Because of the tonality, the three areas
compete for my attention rather than leading my eye from one to another. Which
is largely why I prefer yours; with less boulder foreground, you have less
competition from that area and the other elements have an easier time fighting
with one another.
I think both images would be much improved if the boulder field was in focus
and if the exposure were adjusted so that the snow cover on the boulders looked
like snow. I also think that this is a very tough scene to capture because of
the wide EV range and the complexity of the scene.
And returning to your main point, again I don't see what you are referring to
as noise in his image. I didn't find anything in focus, and there seems to be
some camera movement, but I don't see noise.
