I'm quite sure that this is due to ageing. My first 300/2.8, bought brand 
new, was snowy white. My second, bought used - possibly and old sample, was 
warmer white. This was apparent when I bought a new lens hood for it; the 
hood was snowy white slightly off from the warmer white of the lens.
