I've mentioned before I've been trying to reconcile my back catalog to make the file organization and naming conventions I use consistent throughout.

Yesterday, I finished doing batch renames on a whole year's photos and copied them to a backup hard-drive. I already had a previous backup of that years photos on the backup hard-drive, so before removing the old backup I made a comparison between the two folders to make sure I wasn't getting ready to lose anything.

The old backup copy is f:\images\2004_Photography. The new backup copy is f:\images\2004. Once I'm sure the new backup has everything the the old one had plus any work I've done on the images since then, I can erase the old backup copy to make room for the next year.

What I end up with a a spreadsheet with a line by line comparison between the files in the old folder and the files in the new folder. Looking at them that way, it's readily apparent if there's anything in either copy that's not in the other. Mainly, I'm looking for any files in the old copy that are not in the new one so I can include them.

I found a couple of instances of .psd files that I apparently worked on directly on the backup drive before I got the NAS drive; back when I was using my laptop as my workstation.

Otherwise the old and new were the same *except* ...

The file sizes for all of the .jpg files and all of the .tif files have apparently shrunk from the batch rename.

I don't quite understand how this could happen, but it is consistent throughout.

I thought when you renamed a file it didn't change the file size? I thought you had to open the file and save it again.

The few .PEF files I have from 2004 didn't change size, nor did the file date change in the first copy. The .xmp files did change size, getting a whole lot smaller.

08/14/2010 is when I made the first copy of the archive onto the backup disk. For some reason the way I made the first copy gave copied JPEG, TIFF and XMP files a new date, but didn't affect the date on the PEF files.

MM/DD/2004 is the actual file date when I took the photos.

These files had been renamed before and I think I might have used Adobe Bridge from CS3 when I did it the first time. I don't think I got my copy of CS5 until later in the year.
