I missed the largest part of the migration of the monarchs this year during their stop-over at Colonel Sam Smith Park in New Toronto (a block from my house). Last year there were thousands, tens of thousand, so many they made the trees appear to have orange leaves. I went down to the park last Saturday evening and was surprised to find hundreds of stragglers eating. They were still there Sunday morning, but when I went back on Sunday evening there was nary a monarch to be found. Unlike last year they weren't so co-operative (they were practically landing on me last year) and were a bit skittish, making it a bit more difficult to get good shots. Also unlike last year the late day and early morning sun was spectacular, so I concentrated on backlit shots (so I must apologize for the sameness in that regard) - their wings just look so amazing and stained glass-like in that light!
