Thanks! got it...
but it took some doing.. its black and I couldn't see it I fiddled with the thing you press to change ISO, and tried to move the red indicator and the batter check... Phew

so this little camera is in tip top shape. except there looks like
there is a cap missing on the base plate.. under the takeup reel - a little circle with 4 brass things that look like it was meant for a battery contact? Oh... did this thing ever take a motor drive?

Truth be told, I didn't realize that either - though I should have...
took it to Photo tech, got batteries - it seems lovely - nice and clean
something to sell on ebay - but - and I feel silly asking this - I don't
know how to open the damn thing.

Also where was that place you could go on line and type in the
model number to make sure it isn't something someone lost or
is stolen? Usually that isn't a problem with Sal ARmy stuff..
This looks like someone donated something of a deceased relative.

The number is FE 3441569.

thanks

The FE is one of Nikon's nicer cameras from the 80s. I bet the 50/1.8 is
a series E, which was their "kit lens" at the time. Sharp, but plasticy.
For opening, IIRC, there is a lock at about the 10:00 position on the
ISO dial. Move it backwards and lift the rwind knob as far as it will go
(same as Pentax now).
