The shape of the cutout mimics that of old coffins. There's not much to
scale it by, but it appears to be sized for an infant's or a small

Looks almost like a coffer dam for graves (prevents soil from collapsing back into the grave before the actual burial). If it wasn't such thick metal, it could almost be a buck for constructing an old style casket.
