Good point. I agree that it's a bit harsh, but i think a stop less would have left it underexposed. However, a diffuser would have helped soften it. But when shooting Grace outside on the playground, I've found that for most shots, a diffuser kills too much of the fill light, so I don't use one. For this shot, I think it would have been a plus.
