To give Mike a little room for his statement, I had no way of knowing that, given the number of languages in the world. In this case, I have no way of knowing it's meaning in the example shown. Is this an indoor swimming pool? Rarely called a basin in this part of the world, but a pool.
In my life, I have seen open outdoors areas like the ones originally shown in the photo referred to as basins. Even a boat docking area on San Francisco Bay. And the bowls formed by the area between mountains. #3 definition in the dictionary is "a natural depression in the earths surface, typically filled with water" #1 is for washing your hands and face attached to the wall. #2 is a wide open round container, usually holding liquid.
