Bruce is right and wrong. It is all marketing,
and Pentax has failed miserably. Not in the
aspect of visibility, the sales aspect of marketing,
but with respect to being driven.

Pentax produces some of the finest lenses around,
and the most outstanding consumer bodies available.
BUT -- only 1 pro body. It appears they want to
*soak* all the possible profit from each unit.
Almost 20 years for the LX series.
How long can the MZ-S endure?
There's no long-range vision there.

Pal is right. Pentax equipment is excellent.
But Pentax doesn't have a SERIES -- a reputation --
to go along with the equipment. The LX and MZ-S
stand solo, without a comprehensive *solution*.

What's a photographic solution? It's not just
equipment. It's equipment that will prove itself
in the field as being the BEST. Canon wins with
the fastest AF. That's not all that's required of
an outfit.

How about some outstanding specs to meet demanding
circumstances? Certainly with not the dust/dirt
vulnerability of Pentax' "A" contacts. How is the
dust rejection of the current FA lenses?

Pentax can be taken seriously --
but not as seriously as the others.
Any venue Pentax works in (in 35mm) the others
do as well. This is Pentax' failing --
Pentax does not EXCELL Beyond the others.
Neither in 35mm nor in medium format.
They used to. But no longer.

Mamiya rules studio cameras.
'Blad rules location units.
C & N rule PJ, digital and film.
Pentax is quickly becoming an also-ran,
at least in 35mm and digital. Too much
concentration on the pieces of the pie
and not enough on owning the whole pie.

Pentax needs two things: An earned reputation
and a driven attitude. Without the latter they
cannot have the former. They MUST get ahead of
the curve or risk losing it all in the next decade.

Pentax has more to offer than most people realize.
They are A leader.
But not enough to be THE leader.

My 2 denarii,

Collin
