I really like the original a lot. I don't usually go for OTT 
processing/rendering, but this last version is stunning.

At least as stunning as a rusty old lantern will ever be.

Walt, just for grins I fed that shot to Lightroom and applied an
over-the-top local-contrast-enhancing preset I cooked up (it basically
applies 500% Clarity). Also reduced the exposure .5 stop, and a bunch
of Recovery to rescue some detail in the sky (upper-left). Lastly NR
and edge sharpening.

It is almost certainly taking things too far, but it might give you
ideas. It really brings out the grit ...

You really should preserve it from an untimely fate. It's a great subject.
