Thanks for looking, Ann. The tang is a variety of surgeon fish. It takes its name from the sharp spine at the base of the tail, which is used as a weapon. From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, "tang" means "a projecting shank, prong, fang, or tongue (as on a knife, file, or sword) to connect with the handle."
