The tang is a variety of surgeon fish.  It takes its name from the
sharp spine at the base of the tail, which is used as a weapon.  From
the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, "tang" means "a projecting shank,
prong, fang, or tongue (as on a knife, file, or sword) to connect with
the handle."
