They are dancing to the blues.  Both the music and the dance are in large part 
about finding joy in sorrow.  I don't remember what song was playing, but  it 
was almost certainly about some sorrowful topic, and good dancers dance not 
only with each other and the beat of the music, but to the soul of the song.
