Having been on the same end of school project challenges, and not being at all well-versed in video.... I enjoyed the story!
I recently encountered the same temperature warning symbol with my K-5... I was shooting in a warm-ish room, using live view frequently, and it popped up a couple of times. I took that as a suggestion to shut off the camera for a little while... nothing terrible happened, but I did take care not to leave LV on when I wasn't using it after that. Speaking of LV & focusing... I recently discovered that when in LV mode, you can hit the "info" button to zoom into the preview, and then use the 4-way controller to move around the image, so you can better see what you are focusing on.
