Horses for courses.
I have a Bogen mini gear head for landscape images as it allows minute
adjustments in horizontal & vertical planes. A Kirk BH1 ball head for non
landscape use and a Kirk King Cobra gimbal head for use with the 600. All
are fitted with Kirk 'arca' type plate receivers. My K20D has a Kirk 'L'
bracket and the aplicable lenses have Kirk Plates.
These all sit on top of a Gitzo 3530LS tripod. Nothing against RRS but Kirk
is more or less local and have stood behind their products over the years.

I've been trying to make the same decision. I've narrowed it down to
Kirk and Really Right Stuff. Both are expensive. A fellow member of
the local camera club has a RRS ball head and L-bracket and has no
significant complaints. I'm leaning in that direction.
