Oh yeah! The b&w ~really~ works well here. I think I prefer it to colour. Then again I think jazz is a black and white sort of thing, evocative of small smokie bars in the forties and fifties.

I may agree with you on that being a better shot. I just tried a square crop, and it seems a bit claustrophobic for me. 4x5 might work.
