Just looking at the thumbnails, I was pretty much blown away by them. So
much vibrancy and form! So without further ado, let's get down to
business. These are the ones I liked, no disrespect to the others,
they're all excellent.

Winter
Petr Pazour
Nice winter scene, good foreground detail, nice and sharp. Great.

South Haven Dawn
Mark Cassino
Beautiful colour, interesting shapes of the walkway, and that great
cloudy effect of long exposures with water. Super shot. I wouldn't have
told them about the light bulb ;-)

Grain
Annsan
Excellent study of texture and form. Very difficult to gauge any sense of
scale here. and that's just the ticket. Engaging image that draws you
into it, swallows you up, and spits you out the other side with a 'now
why can't I shoot pics like that?' feeling. Well done.

Old Chestnut
Geoff Stevens
Corker! Excellent composition, the tree in the background beautifully
framed by foreground objects. I'll bet you got some closeups of that
gnarly twisty tree trunk as well.

Cold Rainbow
Alexey Tikhonov
Alexey, either you're a fan of JMW Turner, or I'm a rubber duck. I wasn't
sure about the freighters being cut off at the edge of frame, but then
decided that that was part of the image appeal to me - it was saying 'hey
those freighters are there but who cares - look at the other stuff!' and
I'll bet you agonised over whether or not to include them. I masked them
out with my hand and it didn't work for me. I have a soft spot for
Turner, and you've hit it. My runner-up for this month. Well done!

Lonely One
Ken Waller
I like quirky framing (as you now know) and this caught my eye. Colours
as sharp as a razor, Ken's landscape tells me all I need to know, and
that meets with what he wanted me to know. The bit of white cloud makes
it for me. Can't believe those yellows and oranges! Brilliant.

What Are YOU Looking At?
Gary Murphy
Quirky and fishy. I like the composition. Nice light.

Patience
Dan Scott
Bugs! Oh well, someone's gotta shoot them. And Dan's done a superb job.
Can't believe that's handheld. Translated through to a great scan. Lovely
image.

Slowness
Parvaiz
Took me a minute to figure it out (well I am getting on now...) and I
like the muted colour, the big soft areas, a couple of sharp areas to
inform me of the subject's nature. Yep, does it for me.

Giant Backyard Tree
Jan van Wijk
Stunning image - that colour is amazing.

Bubble Stack
Jostein Yksne
Gorgeous abstract image of frozen bubbles for goodness' sake. Reminiscent
of something from outer space which sits fine with me as I don't come
this planet anyway ;-) Nice work.

Charo
Albano Garcia
Nice work Albano - I'd guess you've captured her cheeky nature well. She
can't not know what the time is eh? Bright, sharp eyes always make the
pic.

Dejiko (August 2001)
Sherwin Abesamis
Another fascinating portrait. With eyes like that you can't fail. Nice
composition. Her parents would shed tears with pride.

Annami
Matti (name incomplete)
Beautiful and classic shot of young girl back lit in a field, blowing
seeds from her palms. Very nice mood captured here. Well done.

The Good Companion
Simon King
Muted and deep browns and yellows on the keyboard of this old typewriter
convey age and memories, as you say. I like the low-key lighting, the
fuzzy areas. No need to be sharp on this, it says it all just as it is.
Lovely.

Hesitating Glue
Gianfranco Irlanda
Beautiful and considered study of every day items is what Gianfranco
likes, and he's not failed here. What a shot! The light is simply
brilliant. The drop of glue dangles in a black void. The colours, both
bright (background) and subtle (highlights) are profound and exquisite.
Easily my pic of the month. Just a fascinating rendition of [That's
enough waxing lyrical. - Ed.]

Dime Detail
William Robb
Desperation or not, it works for me. Nice light - picks out the right
features. Good gritty choice of 'background' adds to the feel. Love it.

Well, I really enjoyed looking through the wonderful range of images on
offer. It is always a treat to see the immense wealth of subject matter
that folk from all over the world come up with. An international gallery,
every month, virtually free of charge - it doesn't get much better than
that. Well done to everyone for submitting, and to the PUGmeisters for
getting it out on time.

Til next month,

Cheers,

Cotty
