It's not what I'd call common here, but it was fairly easy for me to find a 
mini-to-full-size adaptor for $cheap for use with my Macbook Pro.  It was 
harder finding a 5 metre optical cable that wasn't priced like HDMI cables tend 
to be.

The only problem with the mini connector is that they're a bit fragile, which 
is a good reason for using the adaptor as you only need to replace the $5 bit 
instead of a whole cable when you break it.
