This is exactly what it does. AF is achieved by moving the lens elements in the converter. It works over a limited range so the main lens has to focused to a very rough range for the AF to work. I think a 50mm lens, without being touched, will AF from around 5m to infinity. It's also a very good 1.7x converter.
