Peter... I have cleaned the underside of the viewfinder glass by taking a q-tip and wrapping the tip in my lens cleaning cloth (the pseduo-polyester type). I daub on a bit of cleaning fluid, or as Peter suggests, alcohol and very gently wipe the smudge. I wouldn't use too much fluid, just enough to wet the tip. Then, use another spot of the cloth that's dry to wipe the surface clean.
All canned air has uses some propellent. I don't use them that often if I can help it. I have a duster that uses C02 cartridges (like those used in air rifles) that works better since it doesn't get cold like canned air and has no propellent. These are available in the US at: http://www.americanrecorder.com/ I'd put in the exact page URL but they are making changes to their website and the server isn't recognizing the request. The downside to the C02 units is that they don't last very long and they don't have the high pressure that the cans produce. But, they're safer and much smaller.
