Nearly happened to me when I lived on St. Helena. A guy I had done a favour
for once used to leave
a couple of fish from his catch in my car, and usually told me: once though he
forgot to do so, and
this being Saturday morning, by Sunday night we began to notice it.
Fortunately, immediate removal
and disposal meant I did not have the same problem as the fellow in Auckland.
I wonder how much
smell-absorbent material there is in a car?

You just reminded me of a recent article about a guy who left some fish in his
car for a week...
