 Thanks Bruce.  I managed to find out exactly what was happening last 
night after I sent the email.

 The #1 tube has no spring, nor any provision for a spring.

 The #2 and #3 tubes have a spring.  The "bent" end fits in a small 
hole which I originally thought was a hole for those little grub 
screws (which I'd removed entirely the first time, and they're a  
pain to get back in).

 Luckily I didn't have to attempt dismantling the #3 tube.  I was 
afraid that its spring would also leap out of its place before I saw 
where it went.

 So all my questions are answered and all my problems fixed :)
