I would argue that it makes at least as much sense as it always has (which is to say particularly on the longer lenses). If a DA* 300mm f/4 could become a 420mm f/5.6 that is not a bad thing (and the teleconverter surely would cost less than a lens of that focal length and speed would... one would HOPE).
Don't forget that with electronics communicating which lens is on the camera, a lot of things are possible with firmware updates (like lens profiles we have now would become lens profiles when mounted on the 1.4x TC).
