Otis, I wrote in haste. My explanation--that a 1:4 lifesize would fill 1/4 of the negative's width--applies only if the image itself is 36mm wide. After all, if you can shoot a 4mm-long ladybug to fill 9mm of the negative, you've got 2X lifesize.
